But his posthumous reputation is also fascinating for what it reveals about the changing times during the two centuries that followed his brief life of 38 years. this nation’s leading intellectuals of the mid-19th century, and his wisdom is as relevant today as ever. Holmes’ writings – including his still widely quoted “Breakfast-Table” series of essays – have been favorites of Augustana College President Steve Bahls for many years. Come celebrate Holmes 200th anniversary and consider Holmes’ famous words of wisdom with President Bahls. Start: 6:00 pm
Enjoy a good movie at the Main Rock Island Public Library. Each month a significant Independent Film will be shown in the Community Room of the Main Library–401 19th Street–in downtown Rock Island. All showings will begin at 6:00 p.m. They are free and open to the public. This month’s feature is “The Country Teacher (Czech Rep., 115 min).” A gifted and well-qualified young teacher takes a job teaching natural sciences at a grammar school in the country. Here he makes the acquaintance of a woman and her troubled 170-year-old son. The teacher has no romantic interest in the woman but they quickly form a strong friendship, each recognizing the other’s uncertainties, hopes and longing for love. When the teacher’s ex-boyfriend comes to visit from the city, he quickly realizes that nobody in the village knows that the teacher is gay and harbors a secret affection for the teenage boy. His jealous actions set in motion a series of events that will test the inner strength and compassion of the teacher, the woman, and her son to a breaking point. A beautifully shot, powerfully acted, profoundly moving story of desire, responsibility, forgiveness and the need to belong. PLEASE be advised that none of these films are rated and some may not be suitable for children. Start: 6:30 pm
End: 7:30 pm
