Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin aren’t the only notable birth anniversaries of 2009. The Rock Island Public Library and Augustana College will mark “anniversaries you might have overlooked” on four Thursdays this fall at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street. Free! Coffee and cookies served after each lecture.

Nov. 12: “Lord Tennyson’s Reaction to 19^th Century Science” Alfred, Lord Tennyson served as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1850 to his death in 1892, one of the longest tenures in history. His lifespan from 1809 to 1892 placed him in a unique position to comment on the Victorian age of progress, a time of rapid change in science, medicine and technology. Dr. Roald Tweet, professor emeritus of English and former holder of the Conrad Bergendoff Chair in the Humanities will consider how the poet reacted to the conflict between faith and scientific knowledge.

Enjoy a good movie at the Main Rock Island Public Library. Each month a significant Independent Film will be shown in the Community Room of the Main Library–401 19th Street–in downtown Rock Island. All showings will begin at 6:00 p.m. They are free and open to the public. This month’s feature is “In Love We Trust (China, 115 min). A divorced couple learns that the only way to save their little daughter Hehe, who suffers from a blood disease, is to have another child. Now both remarried, Mei Zhu and Xiao Lu are forced to test their love and their commitment to one another by putting their current relationships in danger. A story of parenthood, love, married life, betrayal, trust and giving, which touches upon changes in contemporary society and family life, as well as the moral and ethical dilemmas brought on by modernity. Please be advised that none of these films are rated and some may not be suitable for children.

Cinnamon Spice

For ages Pre-K - 3rd grade at the Main Library.

Start the holidays by making cinnamon ornaments, hearing holiday stories and decorating cookies.

This group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month in the Community Room.  We welcome all skill levels of knitters and crocheters.
