Enjoy a good movie at the Main Rock Island Public Library. Each month a significant Independent Film will be shown in the Community Room of the Main Library–401 19th Street–in downtown Rock Island. All showings will begin at 6:00 p.m. They are free and open to the public. This month’s feature is Somers Town (United Kingdom, 70 min).  Two teenagers, both newcomers to London, forge an unlikely friendship over the course of a hot summer. Tomo (Thomas Turgoose) is a runaway from Nottingham; Marek (Piotr Jagiello), a Polish immigrant, lives in the district of Somers Town, between King's Cross and Euston stations, where his dad is working on a new rail link. When Marke agrees to let homeless Tomo move into his room, unbeknownst to his father, the pair forms a strong bond, as they work odd jobs for an eccentric neighbor and compete for the attention of Maria, a beautiful young French waitress whom they are both infatuated with. But it's only a matter of time before Marek's dad discovers what's going on. Please be advised that none of these films are rated and some may not be suitable for children.

The Rock Island Main Library 2nd Floor Art Gallery will host a special art exhibit from Delores De Wilde Bina, "Bina Butterflies," from May 1 to July 1, Image copyright Delores DeWilde Bina. "Acronicta" 2010. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular library hours.

Many of the large butterfly collages come from her July 2009 Bina Mapflies series, which incorporate various textures, maps and other images. The maps in the collages “represent places I have visited or plan to visit. They also represent the world the butterfly inhabits. The map is a textural surface that allows me to manipulate patterns, textures and create illusionary depth,” says Bina. The pieces in the exhibit include collage, acrylic paint, varied inks, pencil and layered materials.

Bina will host a public reception on May 19 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the library art gallery. The event is free and open to the public.
