An example of White's work, which extends beyond the borders of a traditional canvas. Rock Island artist Charles J. White displays his unique shaped-canvas paintings at the Rock Island Main Library, 401 19th Street, throughout the month of August. The artist will host a free public reception for the show from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 19 in the library’s 2nd floor art gallery. The exhibit is up through Aug. 31.

About the Show: Charles J. White worked in publishing after leaving the U.S. Army, and then taught high school art for 30 years. While earning his master’s degree, he developed the shaped canvas technique on display in the exhibit. The work calls for a great deal of planning, from working out the initial concept to building the frame and stretching the canvas. He builds the acrylic paint in thin layers, to add depth and atmosphere. His paintings have been exhibited at shows and galleries in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and South Carolina. Today, White paints full time, and the backyard of his Rock Island home offers plenty of inspiration in the form of the four-legged wildlife that seem to leap out of the canvases of this show. The cast of outdoor friends and neighbors ranges from the artist’s own dog to squirrels, wild turkeys, owls, raccoons, deer and even an eagle.

The Rock Island Library's 2010 Black History and Civil Rights series concludes August 25, with a 6 p.m. showing and discussion of the American Experience program, "The Murder of Emmett Till." The brutal murder of the 14-year-old-boy in Money, Mississippi sparked civil rights action across the country. Three months after his body was pulled from the Tallahatchie River, the Montgomery bus boycott began. August 28 marks the 55th anniversary of Till's death.

This event in the Main Library Community Room, 401 19th Street, is held in conjunction with the Afro-American Heritage Center as part of a continuing look at family stories and civil rights.

Please note that some scenes in the documentary may disturb younger or more sensitive viewers.

The Rock Island Library’s HUG-A-Book reading event is Thursday, August 26, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., in the Main Library Community Room at 401 19th Street.   HUG-A-Book is an annual early learning program for children ages two to five and their families. Each child gets a new, free book of their very own to hug and take home, courtesy of the Merrill Harris memorial fund of the Rock Island Public Library Foundation. Children and their families can come meet our costumed characters, hear a story or two, sing a song, make some crafts and get a free book. The event is free.

For most of his life, Ignacio Carrillo travelled the villages of northern Colombia, playing traditional songs on his accordion, a legendary instrument said to have once belonged to the devil. He eventually married and settled in a small town, leaving the nomadic life behind. But after the traumatic death of his wife, he vows to never play the accursed accordion again, and embarks on one last journey to return the instrument to its rightful owner. On the way, Ignacio is followed by Fermín, a spirited teenager determined to become his apprentice. Tired of loneliness, Ignacio accepts the young man as his pupil and together they traverse the vast Colombian terrain, discovering the musical diversity of Caribbean culture. Hardened by a life of solitude, Ignacio tries to discourage Fermín from following in his footsteps, but destiny has different plans for them.
