Jan, recently released from prison after serving time for the murder of a child, has always maintained his innocence and is ready to put the past behind him. A gifted organist, he takes a job at an Oslo church under his middle name, Thomas. His talent and gentle manner quickly earn him the respect of his superiors, as well as the love of the pastor, Anna. Thomas even overcomes his initial panic to return the affection of Anna's young son, Jens. But his past catches up with him when Agnes, a local teacher, comes to the church on a school visit and recognizes the organist as Jan, the young man who was convicted for the murder of her son.

The Main Library, 401 19th Street, will close at noon on Thursday, October 14 to set up for Food for Thought, a special fundraiser happening at 5 p.m. Our 30/31 and Southwest Branches will remain open to serve library customers.

Join your hosts, The Rock Island Library Foundation, for a special night of dining around the library, silent auction of signed books and other valuable packages, and more fun around the Main Library. Our Food for Thought fundraiser benefits many special projects on the Rock Island Library's "wish list," including funding bus visits to the library for HeadStart and renewing genealogy research database subscriptions. The library will be open to Food for Thought guests only. Tickets are $25 per person or $45 per couple and include all food, wine, beer and soft drinks. Tickets will be available at the door. This year's Frieze Lecture Series celebrates the 150th anniversary of Augustana College. The annual lecture series partnership allows library guests to explore fascinating topics from Augustana College lecturers without tests or grades! On Oct. 21, Thomas Tredway, 7th president of the college, will speak on the history of Augustana during the pivotal years of 1935-1975. Each free lecture starts at 2 p.m. at the Rock Island Main Library, and includes coffee and conversation afterwards.

The 13th annual series is presented on four Thursdays, October 21 and 28 and November 4 & 11.
