Photo of the historic Old Main building at Augustana. This year's Frieze Lecture Series celebrates the 150th anniversary of Augustana College. The annual lecture series partnership allows library guests to explore fascinating topics from Augustana College lecturers without tests or grades! On Nov. 4, Dr. James Lambrecht, professor of trumpet and director of bands at Augustana, will speak on the college's oldest musical ensemble, the Augustana Symphonic Band.  Each free lecture starts at 2 p.m. at the Rock Island Main Library, and includes coffee and conversation afterwards.

The 13th annual series is presented Thursday, Oct. 21 and 28 and Nov. 4 and 11.

Start: 6:00 pm

Bilal, a 17-year-old Kurdish refugee, has struggled his way through Europe for the last three months, trying to reunite with his girlfriend, who recently emigrated to England. But his journey comes to an abrupt halt when he is stopped by authorities in Calais, on the French side of the Channel. Left with no other alternatives, he decides to swim across. Bilal goes to the local swimming pool to train, where he meets Simon, a middle-aged swimming instructor in turmoil over his imminent divorce. Simon agrees to help Bilal, hoping to win back the affection of his wife, who does volunteer work helping immigrants. But what begins as a relationship based on self interest, develops into something much bigger than Simon could ever have imagined, as he too will ultimately risk everything to reach happiness.

Start: 6:00 pm

Hannah Maynard, prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, is leading a trial against a former commander of the Yugoslavian National Army who is accused of the deportation and later killing of dozens of Bosnian-Muslim civilians. When a key witness commits suicide, it looks like the case will unravel, however Hannah refuses to give in.

Hoping to uncover new findings, she travels to the witness' burial in Sarajevo and meets his sister Mira who she senses has much more to say than she is willing to admit.  Despite threats of violence, Mira reluctantly agrees to testify at The Hague. However, she and Hannah must both risk life and limb to make it to the court, only to discover that there are traitors among their own ranks.
