Children of the Holocaust Art Exhibit

Artist and holocaust educator Barbara Powers will bring her exhibit: A Tribute to Children of the Holocaust: Portraits that Bridge the Gap Between Then and Now to the Main Library 2nd floor art gallery. Available for viewing during library hours from April 9 to June 8.

Two special events will be held as part of the exhibit:

Art reception and book signing with Powers: Tuesday, April 10, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m, Main Library, followed by:

A program on "The Promise: The Moving Story of a Family in the Holocaust," a book Powers co-authored with Eva Schloss, April 10, 5:30 pm, Main Library Community Room.

The exhibit and four school presentations are sponsored by donations to the Jewish Federation of the Quad Cities from the Scott County Regional Authority and the Rock Island Community Foundation. Additional funding from the Rock Island Library Foundation.

Learn the basics of using your point-and-shoot digital camera in a beginning class for anyone new to digital photography. Instructor Dee Oberle, of Gypsy Chicks Photography, will discuss basic terms, and show you camera tools, how to take and delete photos, the meaning of those little pictures on the dial, and how to get your images off the memory card and into print.

Bring with you to class: Digital “point-and-shoot” camera, charged batteries, camera manual (if available) and memory card.

Stephen Foster & the Rise of American Music with Chris Vallillo

Noted musician and public radio performer Chris Vallillo will perform “Stephen Foster and the Rise of American Music” at 6:00 pm at the Rock Island Main Library Community Room, 401 19^th Street.

From his first hit “Oh Susannah” in 1848 to his death in 1864, composer Stephen Foster created music that touched millions. His songs were sung around the world and played a large part in creating an emerging popular culture in America. Looking back, his songs also reflect the complex, and difficult, relationship between the black and white cultures of the young nation. Award-winning folksinger and songwriter Chris Vallillo presents the music of Stephen Foster and explores his impact on American culture. The program is free and open to the public.
