Library Furlough Day

One-day closure due to budget cuts

All Rock Island Public Library locations will close Wednesday, Feb. 29 due to citywide budget cuts. Regular library hours will resume Thursday, March 1, 2012.
Services unavailable during the one-day furlough: Most library services will be unavailable during the closure. All staff will be on unpaid leave and will not be able to check phone, mail, e-mail or other messages.

 No materials will be due and no fines will be accrued

 The last day to check out Library items before the closure is Tuesday, Feb. 28. 

No book drops will be open. Do not leave books and materials outside Library locations during the furlough days.

All Rock Island Library book drops will be locked after 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Book drops will reopen at 9 a.m. on Thursday.  

Reduced access to the website (www.rockislandlibrary.org) The online calendar, databases (online tools), downloadable books and other features will be available, but any questions sent in via the website will not be answered. No staff members will be working to maintain the site or answer questions. Library Facebook and Twitter sites will not be monitored or answered on furlough days.

No library computers will be available. You will not be able to use a computer on Thursday.

No access to Wi-Fi inside our building. Our building will be closed.

No book club kits will be sent, received or returned during the one-day furlough.

No programs or events in the library’s Main or Southwest Branch meeting rooms.

The Friends of the Rock Island Library bookstore at our 30/31 Branch will be unavailable on Thursday. The bookstore will reopen on Friday.  

No mail or other deliveries will be received on the furlough day. Staff will not be available to accept deliveries.

  • No library cards will be issued or renewed during the furlough.
  • Calls or e-mails to our Reference Department will not be answered until the next day.  
  • No e-mail notification sign-ups will be processed until Thursday.

Electronic services available during furlough days
Some services from our www.rockislandlibrary.org  will be available for remote use during the one-day furlough. Please note that staff will not be available to offer assistance in the use of these services.
·         Catalog. You may search for books and materials. You will be able to place holds on items, but fulfullment of those holds may be delayed as a result of the closing.
·         ‘PatronAccount’ information. You will be able to see what items you have checked out or placed on hold, as well as see your fines.
·         Bookletters. You will continue to receive e-mail from our Bookletters subscription, and may use our website to read newsletters about upcoming books, DVDS, etc.
·         Calendar of Events, News  & other web pages. You will be able to see information about upcoming library programs and read updates from your library. Staff will not be available to answer questions.
·         Databases. You will have remote access to the library’s databases, including Valueline, Mango Languages, Heritage Quest, Grolier Online and more. You will need a Rock Island Library card. Ancestry.com will not be available as it can only be used within library locations.
·         Downloadable media. You will have access to downloadable e-book and audiobook titles in Overdrive. Each site offers help and details on system requirements and device compatibility. 
·         Automated notification services, such as e-mail and phone courtesy notices, will continue to go through. However, please note that items will not be available for pick up until Rock Island Libraries reopen.
 No other furlough days are planned at this time.
