Watts-Midtown Driveway Work

Work began this morning on repairing the driveway leading into our Watts-Midtown Branch and the RI YMCA. Please note that there is one lane in and out of the parking lot. Please alternate when entering or leaving the lot, and note that there is no left hand turn onto the drive off 30th Street.

Remember that you can return items to any Rock Island Library, even if it was checked out at the branch. Miss Ranell's Friday storytime will move to our Downtown Children's Library for Friday. Thank you for your patience as the YMCA repairs this driveway.

Event Details

Please join us for a free community lecture with Dr. Jane Simonsen, Professor of History at Augustana College.

Communities across the nation, including in the QC, often recognize Native Americans through public displays of "commemoration." While such displays might be intended to honor Native people, they risk locating indigenous communities in the past rather than the present and emphasizing cultural deficits over cultural values. This talk will explore the historical roots of narratives about Native people and nations that non-Natives still rely on, and consider what kinds of initiatives can change the conversation around Native histories, communities, cultures, and values.
