1984 is a classic dystopian novel by George Orwell, first published in 1949. It depicts a totalitarian future society under the constant surveillance of "Big Brother" and the Party, where free thought is a crime. The story explores themes of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the manipulation of language and truth through concepts like "Newspeak," "thoughtcrime," and "doublethink".
Although introduced 77 years ago, it serves as a warning about the dangers of absolute government control and remains highly relevant today.
Copies of the book are readily available through the Rock Island Public Library and PrairieCat system.
Many of the books discussed include topics of an adult nature, but this book club is open to everyone. New attendees are always welcome.
