Please Meet Singing Bird (wife of warrior chief Black Hawk) - Kim Sigafus Presentation, Illinois Humanities Road Scholar
You’ve heard and known about our great warrior, Black Hawk, who made the Rock Island area his home before the white people arrived.
Now you should meet his wife, named Singing Bird.
Kim Sigafus, an Ojibwa author, whose family is from the White Earth Reservation in northwest Minnesota, will be here to fill you in on Singing Bird’s life as a Native American wife and mother. What was it like to be courted, to marry a native brave, to raise their children?
In addition, she will have with her items native women would have used. She sings, drums, and fashions dream catchers and Talking Feathers. The audience will be able to pick up and view the items, learn Native language and music, and even try their skill with the drum.
An interactive experience, there will be time allowed after her performance/presentation for Questions & Answers.
You will not want to miss this wonderful opportunity.
